World’s Biggest and Deepest Diamonds mine that was Excavated Before 19th Century



Once you travel to Kimberly Mine in South Africa, you can see this huge hole on the pictures below with your own eyes. It is the biggest and deepest diamonds mine that was dug without any modern machinery and advance digging utilities. The hole is the result of hard work of 50.000 miners with their own hand and traditional picks and shovels.

The excavation itself was started from 1871 until 1914 and the long collaboration works successfully removed 22 million tons of dirt out of the face of the earth. The crop of the excavation was 2720 kilograms or 14.504.566 karats of diamonds. In other words, for every 8088, 2 tons of dirt the company earned 1kg diamond.

De Beers Brothers company is the corporation who responsible for the mining since the first day of digging up to now. Today, the project of Kimberly Mine is still continued but this time, the company uses modern underground mining technique to explore the mining. It reduces casualties, more environmental friendly and more cost effective

The deep of the big hole is around 215 meters and the wide is around 463 meters. Around 20% total space of the huge diamond hole is inhabited by underground water at this point. From the picture, Kimberly mine, one of the  Biggest and Deepest Diamonds mine in the world, is quite beautiful. I think I should make a new agenda to visit the mine one day.
